Big Red Weekend Recap:
The first weekend of the new year was a busy one for the Big Red as several of our teams returned to action following the holiday break. It started on Friday night as the JV and Varsity boys basketball teams traveled to Crestview to take on the undefeated and league leading Cougars. Both teams lost but the varsity gave the Cougars all they could take and went toe to toe all game long before losing a heartbreaker 62-57. Both teams came out with some offensive fire and traded blows the entire 1st half. The Big Red would hold a 33-30 lead at the half as they put the Cougars on notice. The 2nd half was much of the same as both teams would build decent leads at different points before the Cougars were able to make a couple big plays late in the game to seal the 5 point win over the Big Red. The tough loss drops the Big Red to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play. They will be back in action on Wednesday hosting Bucyrus.
On Saturday the MS girls basketball team returned to action by traveling to South Central and losing a close tough game to the Trojans. They will be back in action on Tuesday hosting Monroeville.
The freshman boys also returned to action on Saturday by traveling to Monroeville and lost to the Eagles. They are scheduled to be back in action tonight hosting Western Reserve.
The MS wrestling team made the trip to Norwayne for the annual Cat Classic and competed hard as a team. Clayton Tabor led the way for them with a 3rd place finish while Jayce Rogers also placed by finishing in 5th place. They will be back in action on Saturday this week at the South Central Invite.
The JV and Varsity girls were also in action on Saturday traveling to Western Reserve in conference play. The JV team lost before the varsity won a low scoring defensive battle by a 28-24 final score. The Lady Big Red led from start to finish by holding leads of 4-0 after the 1st quarter, 8-2 at the half, and 19-10 after the 3rd quarter. The roughriders battled back to make it close at the end of the game but the Big Red held on for their 3rd win in a row to improve to 4-7 overall and 3-4 in conference play. They will look to make it 4 in a row on Thursday when they host South Central.
Also on Saturday, the HS wrestling team hosted the annual Plymouth Invite hosting 12 other teams from around the area. State ranked and annual state power Waynedale ran away to the team victory while the Big Red finished in 4th place as a team. Zach Miller and Ben Trimmer led the way for the Big Red with individual championships in their respective weight classes. Noah Robinson took a 2nd place finish while Thomas Winegardner added a 3rd place finish. Lucas Distl added in a 4th place finish with Hunter McClure taking 5th and Isaiah Miller rounding out the placers with a 6th place finish. They will be back in action this Saturday at the Columbus Academy Invite.

Big Red Weekend Recap:
All three of our Big Red HS programs were in holiday action over the weekend bridging the gap between Christmas and New Year's. The wrestling team competed in the annual 2 day Marion Harding Invite on Friday and Saturday with 36 other teams from around the state. The Big Red had a solid showing taking 16th place in the 36 team field. Noah Robinson led the way taking a 2nd place finish losing only in the championship match. Zach Miller and Thomas Winegardner were the other 2 placers for the Big Red with Zach taking 5th and Thomas taking 8th. They will return to action this Saturday hosting the annual Plymouth Invite at PHS with wrestling starting at 10am on Saturday.
The JV and Varsity boys basketball teams were in action on Friday night as they returned to conference action at New London. The JV team lost to the Wildcats before the Varsity earned their 2nd win in a row with a 73-53 victory over New London. After the score was tied at the end of the 1st quarter the Big Red used a strong 2nd quarter to build a lead and was able to keep a double digit lead for most of the 2nd half en route to the conference win. With the win they improve to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. They will be off until Friday when they travel to Crestview.
The Varsity girls were then in action on Saturday hosting St. Paul and capped off a good weekend for the Big Red with a 48-39 overtime win over the Flyers. The Lady Big Red fell behind early and would trail the Flyers for the majority of the game until the final minute of regulation. After a 3 pointer at the buzzer at the end of the 3rd quarter cut the deficit to 7 the Lady Big Red would go onto outscore the Flyers 10-3 in the 4th quarter and would force overtime after splitting a pair of FT's with 1 second left. The overtime period would be all Big Red as they outscored the Flyers 9-0 in the extra 4 minutes to earn the win. They improve to 2-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play. They will be back in action on Thursday hosting Black River.
The MS wrestling team was also in action on Friday traveling to Bucyrus for a holiday tournament. They competed hard as a team and came away with 3 individual placers. Clayton Tabor and Jayce Rogers both took 5th place while Levi Foley took 6th. They will be back in action this weekend on Saturday at the Norwayne Cat Classic.

RECAP updates from our Winter Break!
December 23, 2024
Big Red Weekend Recap:
Our winter sports teams were busy over the weekend before heading into the holiday break as several of our teams were in action. The girls basketball teams hosted New London in Friday night girls basketball action. The two quarter JV game ended in a 5-5 tie before the varsity struggled to get things going offensively and couldn’t keep up with the FC leading Wildcats falling by a 62-20 final score. They drop to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in league play and will be off until Saturday when they host St. Paul.
The MS girls hosted Western Reserve on Saturday morning and lost a close game to Roughriders while the MS boys traveled to Western Reserve and came with another split as the 7th grade lost while the 8th grade picked up a win. The boys will be back in action tonight at Mapleton in a rescheduled game while the girls will have two weeks off over break.
The MS wrestling team was also in action on Saturday at Monroeville and competed well in their 2nd invite of the season. They will be back in action on Friday at Bucyrus.
The JV and Varsity boys rounded the weekend out on Saturday night hosting Black River in non-conference action. The JV team picked up a win in a shortened two quarter game. The varsity jumped out to a big 1st quarter lead before Black River would get hot offensively and fight their way back into the game and would take a lead at halftime over the Big Red. Black River maintained a small lead for most of the 3rd quarter and into the 4th before the Big Red made enough plays down the stretch to seal a 55-49 win over the Pirates. They improve to 3-4 overall on the season and will be back in action on Friday night at New London.

Big Red Recap:
It was a boys basketball Thursday night for the Big Red as the MS teams hosted Crestview while the JV and Varsity teams traveled to Mapleton. The MS teams took a split with the Cougars as the 7th grade dropped a tough game by a 34-30 score before the 8th grade cruised to a win in what was a two quarter game due to low numbers at Crestview. Both teams will continue their busy schedule tomorrow morning as they travel to Western Reserve for an 11am start.
The JV and Varsity traveled to Mapleton and had a tough night coming away with two losses. After falling behind 19-8 after the 1st quarter the varsity battled back to make it a 3 point game (26-23) at the half and kept it within striking distance the entire 2nd half but just could not get enough offense to get over the hump and take a lead as they would fall to the Mounties by a 52-45 final score. They drop to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play and will be right back in action tomorrow hosting Black River. JV will start at 4pm tomorrow followed by Varsity.
