Big Red Weekend Recap:
It was an eventful start to the 3 day holiday weekend for the Big Red as several of our teams were in action on Friday and Saturday. It all started on Friday night when the football team traveled to Willard and celebrated Military Appreciation Night with the Flashes. The two teams battled it out in what was one of the most competitive back and forth matchups in recent years between the two backyard rivals. After Willard got on the scoreboard first with a short TD pass the Big Red answered right back on a long TD run by Ethan Keefe to take a 7-6 lead late in the 1st quarter. The rest of the game would be more of the same as it was a constant back and forth battle as both teams combined big scoring drives and plays with big plays on defense and special teams. Willard would take the lead back after returning a Big Red fumble for a TD with just over 2 minutes left in the 1st half but the Big Red would once again grab the momentum back with a quick TD drive capped off by a Owen Wright 5 yard TD run as the Big Red would take a 14-12 lead into the half. The Flashes would strike first in the 3rd quarter to grab the lead back at 18-14 and after the defenses traded a few stops the Big Red would find the endzone again early in the 4th quarter on a Lincoln Distl 2 yard QB sneak to take a 21-18 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game. Willard would answer right back with a quick TD drive to regain the lead at 24-21 on what would be the winning and final score of the game. The Big Red had two final opportunities on offense but could not find their way down the field as they would drop a heartbreaker to the Flashes and fall to 1-1 on the season. They will travel to Wellington on Friday night this week.
The Cross Country teams competed in the Bucyrus Elks Invite on Saturday morning as the HS girls team brought home a 5th place team finish led by Morgan Follett's 5th place individual finish in a time of 21:01. Audrey Smith followed in 31st place while Anna Caughenbaugh (37th), Aly Lewis (47th), and Kristi Yeager (48th) rounded it for the girls. The HS boys were led by Colton Sundstrom's 35th place finish in a time of 19:27 followed by Zach Miller in 59th place. Luke and Jack Kelbley rounded it out for the boys in 96th and 99th place. Weston Smith led the way for the MS runners taking 2nd place in the MS boys race while Carter Jester followed in 8th place. Ari Miller represented the MS girls in 58th place. They will all be back in action this weekend at Seneca East's Stars, Stripes, and Lights Invite.
The HS Volleyball teams were all in action on Saturday morning as well as they hosted Black River in non-conference action and all fell to the Pirates in straight sets. All 3 teams will be right back in action tonight as they travel to Mt. Gilead for a tripleheader with freshman starting at 4:30pm.
